Labor Trafficking
Labor Trafficking is the exploitation of an individual for financial gain. It is often using force, fraud or coercion to introduce another individual to work or provide a service. Many victims of labor trafficking are not free to make their own basic life choices, such as where and when to work or where to live.
Labor Trafficking can occur in any industry and is an underreported crime. Victims often fear for their safety and wellbeing.
According to the U.S. National Human Trafficking Hotline, a disproportionately number of victims of labor trafficking were in this country legally on temporary work visas. Most individuals came to work in this country and promised good paying jobs but faced abuse and wage theft. The pandemic made the problem worse – despite the need for these workers more essential than ever. They were threatened with deportation if they complained, or trapped in debt for fees they never should have paid for in the first place.
